Manchester United might want listen to the advice of former League One boss Dino Maamria on how to effectively defend throw-ins.

Erik ten Hag's side were deservedly beaten 4-0 by Crystal Palace on Monday night, with the first goal in particular too easy to concede.

Daniel Munoz sent a simple throw-in into the feet of Michael Olise, who span past Casemiro and ran free to fire into the bottom corner.

It spelled the beginning of a disastrous night of United defending and left Dino Maamria 'amazed' at the lack of organisation he saw.

Maamria most recently managed League One side Burton Albion and took to Instagram to display how throw-ins should be defended.

He included a clip of Sky Sports' analysis of Olise's goal, highlighting how the Palace man was able to just drift into the space in front.

Maamria then included a clip of his Burton side away at Derby and showed what 'has been drilled to my players in the video/meeting room and on the grass…'

His players could be quickly seen pressing the opposition once they took the throw and forced them into a mistake to win the ball back.

Similar is seen in a second clip away at Reading - Burton ensured that there was little to no option for the pass from the throw in and their press saw the opposition give the ball away.

Both videos were a stark contrast to the clip on United's defending, with Ten Hag's side leaving far too much free space for Olise.

Maamria showed just how effective his side were at limiting the opposition in such a scenario as possession was regained quickly on both occasions.

United could therefore be set to work on defending throw-ins on the training ground after their season took another dismal turn.

Olise scored his second of the game following strikes from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell to complete the rout for Palace.

It was United's 13th league defeat of the season and one that casts doubt over their chances of qualifying for Europe as they sit eighth.

They are also on course for their worst Premier League finish ever, with their 81 goals conceded in all competitions the most since the 1976/77 campaign.

United next welcome title-chasing Arsenal to Old Trafford on Sunday, where another loss could all but end their hopes of continental football.
