Keane Rejoins Town
Tuesday, 20th Aug 2019 14:37

Town have announced the re-signing of striker Will Keane on a one-year contract with an option of a further season.

Keane initially moved to Portman Road on loan from Hull City in January and scored three goals in nine starts and two sub appearances but spent much of his time in Suffolk on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old was subsequently released by the Tigers in May and has spent the summer getting over the injury.

Stockport-born Keane came through the ranks at Manchester United where he made two sub appearances in the Premier League and spent spells out on loan at Wigan, QPR, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston.

In August 2016, Hull paid the Red Devils a reported £1.02 million for 6ft 2in tall Keane, who has been capped by England at U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21 levels, but who switched international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland earlier in the year.

A serious knee ligament injury - the second of his career, he previously missed the whole of the 2012/13 campaign - saw him sidelined for more than a year of football with the Tigers and he made only 11 starts and 15 sub appearances, scoring once, for the East Yorkshiremen.

Keane said in January that he would be keen on joining the Blues on a longer-term basis.

“Would a permanent move to Ipswich appeal, even if it meant League One football? Yes, definitely," he said.

"I’ve been really impressed by the size of the club and all the facilities — training ground and stadium — as well as the fans. You can see it’s a great set-up and something I’ve really enjoyed being a part of so far."

The striker could be Town's final signing of the summer with manager Paul Lambert having targeted three additions before the window closes on September 2nd.

Keane joins right-back Kane Vincent-Young and loanee left winger Anthony Georgiou, who signed yesterday.

IF he can remain fit then a very good league 1 signing. Moaners will moan but I rate the lad and he will compliment Norwood and Jackson nicely. Welcome back Keano!

Very good signing, I thought his wages were going to be an issue but his obviously decided to lower his wage to get a contract at Town shows his commitment. His going to score goals in this league if he stay fit and good competition for the other strikers. Welcome Wil fingers crossed you'll stay fit and score mega number of goals for us. Looking better already good crowd tonight to get the team going and who knows where we will be next May. Well down Marcus and Co for getting this signing

Is he fit? Is he Match fit? Has he done any pre season training?

Good signing if so.

I am very happy with this. Even if he plays a third of the matches this season, his impact in those games at League One level could be huge. Welcome back, Will.

Can't share in the excitement unfortunately. We needed to move away from players who are constantly injured and never seem to learn. We need players who can play 35-40 games a season, not 10-15.

I'd love to be proved wrong and he's the type of player we're crying out for, but I just can't see him ever being fit.

That headline had me very worried for a moment! Thought we'd drafted in The Dark Lord

He gives 100%, that could be why he has been injured, I am very pleased with this signing and hope that he is fit again very soon.

If he can stay fit! A excellent signing for this level! In only a few appearances last season he made a real impact! I'd imagine it's going to be a few weeks (October) before he can feature as he has had no pre-season!

As many others have said IF fit he might do a job but we already have numerous others with the'If fit' tag to them...but no fee so maybe worth the gamble just a little unsure on his strike rate.

Fantastic news, just hope the doubters are proved wrong!

Not sure he was that injury prone but hoping he's ready for action in coming weeks.

BlueBlood90 will no doubt get down voted but I agree with him. To me it shows our scouting needs an overhaul. We are far too blinkered down certain routes. Norris and Holy touted to us by Barts agent, loads of people Klug would know from Spurs academy and going back in for the same players we know have terrible injury records.

Fantastic player when fit and firing on all cylinders but also a massive gamble with his injuries. Jury's out for me fingers crossed though.

I believe our scouts dont watch football matches but scan the recovery.
Still good luck on your second spell at PR.
